A: There maybe some underlying hormonal imbalance that you need to improve first. In women, there is a strong relationship among the ovarian, adrenal, and thyroid systems. These three organs are intimately co-dependent on one another for optimal function. This axis, also called the Ovarian Adrenal and Thyroid axis (OAT) must be correctly balanced if women are going to feel well. If the adrenals are weak, cortisol production may be adversely affected. Excessive cortisol can create a condition of thyroid resistance. This means that your body may fail to respond in an efficient way to your own thyroid signal. This resistance applies to many other hormones such as insulin, progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. That is why stress, when chronic, can make you feel so rotten, like a slow-motion train wreck in progress. Few of your body’s hormones are allowed to work at optimal levels. Your sugar level can become imbalanced; blood pressure regulation may be affected. Chemical and food allergies may start surfacing, which may cause: itchiness, migraines, rashes, no known reason for weight gain, and cravings for sweets or salty foods. Your menstrual flow can also become irregular. Estrogen replacement often becomes ineffective, and symptoms of estrogen dominance like: weight gain at the hips, water retention, persistent hot flashes, and moodiness can be observed despite normal estrogen levels.
