How taxing is it on the body when you overeat?

Q: How taxing is it on the body when you overeat? What is happening physiologically for a food coma to occur?

A: For one thing, overeating cause the body to have more calories than it can expense, resulting in weight gain. A food coma is a direct result of the body’s parasympathetic nervous system response in the GI tract due to carbohydrate loading or overeating. Thus affecting the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream because of neurochemical and hormonal changes. This results in a state of low energy and sleepiness.
