The Dangers of Tainted Meat

Pork and Tainted MeatPork is a meat commonly consumed in the U.S. and around the world. It’s a healthy part of our diets. Tainted meat, in this case pork, can have a huge impact on so many people’s lives; especially to those who are already sick. This study explains in a little deeper sense what the findings showed and how it can have an impact on a person’s health.

Consumer Reports recently posted an article that Americans should be cautious, when reconsidering their options when choosing ham, pork chops, or even bacon. The recent study suggests that samplings of pork contained an unreasonable amount of toxic antibiotic resistant bacteria. Along with the resistant bacteria, growth hormones that are typically fed to pigs were also found.

In the report, analysis of pork samples obtained throughout the United States, contained the bacteria Yersinia Enterocolitica. Yersina Enteroclitica causes fever, stomach pain and diarrhea. Some samples were also found to contain Salmonella.

Some of the 198 samples that were analyzed proved to be resistant to antibiotics that are typically given to treat infections in humans. That is likely due to the common uses of low dose antibiotics that are used on pork farms. By doing so, this could accelerate the growth of superbugs; drug resistant bacterium that cause or contribute to human health issues. The food safety expert also stated that no drug should be routinely used in order to promote the growth of animals.

The research tested a total of 240 pork samples with a total of 20% that had low levels of the drug Ractopamine. Ractopamine was approved by the United States food and drug administration in the year 1999, in order to promote the leanness and growth of the pigs. Ractopamine has been banned in countries around the world, such as the European Union, China, Taiwan and 80 other countries.

Robert S. Lawrence M.D., director of the Center for a Livable Future from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, states that when given a low dose of antibiotics for the use of growth promotion, you wind up killing off the bacteria that are susceptible no matter if it’s E. Coli, Campylobacter, Salmonella or many other bacteria. This will form spontaneous mutations or will transfer the genes from the resistant bacteria; which will cause those bacteria to become resistant as well. In the recent research study that was conducted at Boston University, Dr. Lawrence states, that low doses of antibiotics have caused enough stress on the bacteria that it helps to increase the rate of mutations and resistance to drugs.

Tainted Meat and Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome

The likelihood to become ill or have the flu is greater if you suffer from AFS or have symptoms of it. With an already weakened immune system eating pork that contains the bacteria Yersinia Enterocolitica or Salmonella can increase the side effects immensely since your body will have a harder time fighting off illness or food poisoning. The fact that this doesn’t respond well to antibiotics is even a bit more scarier and should be looked into a bit more.Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome affects various systems and organs as it progresses through the stages. It has been known to be debilitating and even deadly. Food poisoning also has known to be deadly. So the combination of both can having lasting effects. We need to find better ways to process meat that won’t cause it to be tainted in order to protect our health.

If you think you have eaten tainted meat or have food poisoning you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. Be sure to take proper action if you are feeling any symptoms of food poisoning.

Overall we need more studies like this study in order to find a better solution to producing untainted pork. Our health is crucial here. It’s scarier how antibiotics do not work on some of these bacterias. With more studies I believe we can come up with a way to stop this from spreading to our meat sources.
